Paint Flames On Headlight Bucket
January 17th, 2009
These are instructions for painting flames onto a 2000+ Honda Shadow Sabre. The methods can likely be adapted to other bikes. Keep in mind that the Sabre has a plastic bucket that makes painting more condusive. A true metal/chrome bucket will need more work in order to ensure the durability of the paint.
- Remove headlight from bike
- Remove chrome trim ring and all internal parts
- Using the attached template, trace out flames on contact paper then flip over and trace/cut out other side.
- Cut out flames (i.e. Exacto knife)
- Wipe down (or wash) headlight bucket with alcohol to get rid of surface contaminates
- Cut flames in 2" increments and press onto headlight bucket. The 2" increments helps to prevent the contact paper from bunching up and folding over.
- Place contact paper flames over headlight bucket and pressed edges down firmly - lining up edges that you cut. Use a rag to ensure that no edges come up.
- Sand the chrome area that is not covered by the contact paper flames w/600 grit paper so the primer would stick. A light fingertip sanding should work fine.
- Krylon Fusion white paint acts as a primer and stick to the plastic bucket making this job easier and more durable. 4 extremely thin coats with a quick sand between coats should make for a strong base coat.
- Paint the base coat color and top coats and let dry for 2 days.
- For added durability, spray with Acrylic clearcoat.
