Stock Air Box Removal and Cone Filter Install
Remove Air Box
The only things I needed to remove were the rear fender, battery and battery "box". I had to disconnect ALL the wiring harnesses and pull them over the side of the bike. My bike looks like it has it's guts hanging out right now. LOL I also had to cut off the tools box/ shelf, what ever you want to call it and then the air box slid right out the right side of the bike.
You're right. I now have DIRECT access to the fuel pump and filter.
Only problem is, they used to be attached to the under side of the air box so now I need to fab a bracket to hold them. I also removed the case breather tube and the little white box up in the frame after this pic was taken. I'm going to AutoZone today to pick up a small crank case breather filter to put in its place. Other than that, I still need to find a way to attach all the wires to the frame so they aren't flopping around in there.
Install Air Box
You MUST have some type of air box !!
I tried it without one and the top end had a sputter that I just could not get rid of till I installed the air box. I tried about 20 different jet/needle setups (literally) and it would not go away. The air box opening is about 6 times larger than the stock air box opening so you still get much more air.
I made a housing for the air filter and low and behold, the problem of sputtering at top end went away. One thing good did come out of this though. I now have a much bigger opening for the air filter housing than anyone could have gotten with the stock housing. So, yes I wasted some time but I ended up better off.
I went to Advanced Auto and bought one of those "splash covers":

I then went to Home Depot and bought a 18" X 24" piece of 26 guage galvanized steel and made a bottom cover for the filter (I love my Dremel tool).

Here it is installed in the bike:
